To the Venezuelan community in South Florida, and especially to the Venezuelan international students, faculty, and staff who call St. Thomas University home, the removal of Nicolás Maduro from power is a moment of real hope. Across families, neighborhoods, and communities here and abroad, we are witnessing the joy that comes when a people can finally imagine a freer tomorrow.
At St. Thomas University, we share in that sense of celebration. We recognize what this day represents for so many Venezuelans, and we look forward with optimism to a free Venezuela.
This change represents a positive step for Venezuela and for the Venezuelan people. For years, the world has watched Venezuelans endure the consequences of corruption, repression, and hardship. Maduro has also been indicted in the United States on narco-terrorism charges. Accountability matters. It matters for the rule of law, for the victims of violence and instability, and for a nation that deserves to be led with integrity.
I respect that some are opposed to this action, and that many are weighing difficult questions about sovereignty, stability, and what comes next. But it is important to keep sight of a larger truth: Venezuela deserves a future shaped by its people and grounded in freedom. For years, Maduro undermined democratic institutions while the Venezuelan people paid the price, even as his regime was accused of trafficking illicit drugs. This moment can be a turning point, not toward division, but toward rebuilding.
To our Venezuelan STUdents: your love for your homeland inspires us. You represent the very best of what education at STU is meant to do, to prepare ethical leaders who lift others up. As Venezuela looks ahead, we pray that the days to come bring peace, justice, and a path to a once again prosperous democracy.
St. Thomas University stands with you, today and always.
