Program Overview

The BA in Psychology at STU explores the world of behavior and the processes of the mind. Students will study counseling and the treatment of mental disorders, and the application of psychology in the workplace and community. Students may specialize in legal and forensic psychology, experimental research, field based community evaluation, action research, social and organizational fields. The fields of business, law, government, education and human services are also areas that are open to psychology majors. Because human behaviors, thoughts and emotions form an important part of many academic disciplines, the psychology major serves as an excellent background for a wide variety of careers.

The BA in Psychology degree program examines human behavior and mental processes, covering areas such as counseling, mental health, and the application of psychology in various professional settings. To further specialize their expertise, students can choose a specialization. The BA in Psychology can be paired with STU’s 3 + 3 BA/JD program.

Health Psychology

The field of Health Psychology is an applied specialization focused on promoting good health and the prevention and treatment of disease and illness. Health psychologists focus on understanding how people react, cope, and recover from illness, as well as improving health care delivery and improving government health policies.

The Health Psychology specialization allows students who have an interest in both psychology and the health field which can include biology, medicine, nursing, counseling and other fields to study these two areas. A carefully selected set of courses, research and service-learning experience prepares students for careers or continued professional training in these fields.

3 + 3 BA/JD program

STU offers a unique 3 + 3 BA/JD program, that allows students to complete their bachelor’s degree requirements and earn their law degree in 6 years instead of the traditional 7.

Students spend less time in school and thus are eligible to take the bar exam earlier and enter the legal field a year ahead of their contemporary counterparts with the potential to take advantage of positions in private or public law in a less crowded competitive field.

Those who successfully enter the STU College of Law through the BA/JD program will automatically receive a $5000 scholarship for each of the three years of study while in law school.

A Psychology degree from opens doors to diverse career paths in business, law, education, healthcare, and government. Graduates find opportunities in human resources, market research, sales, and advertising, as well as in government agencies like the FBI and Homeland Security. Those pursuing roles in education may become teachers or administrators, while others serve in school and agency settings as counselors or social workers. With a specialization in Health Psychology, graduates can work in clinical, community, occupational, and public health settings, or continue to advanced studies in mental health counseling, medicine, public policy, and law.

In the Classroom

STU Psychology students engage in a stimulating learning environment that combines theory, research, and real-world application. Courses cover topics such as human behavior, mental health, counseling, and the relationship between the mind and body. Students gain hands-on experience through research projects in dedicated psychology labs, working closely with faculty mentors.

The psychology department has two research laboratories that are exclusively devoted to psychology students conducting research. Students participate in hands-on original research provided by an experienced, productive, and stimulating faculty research mentor. Experience in designing, analyzing and presenting original research is a component that graduate admissions committees consider a key skill contributing to a student’s success in graduate school.

Psychology majors also have an opportunity to work as mentors and tutors with students in the local community. Students travel to local schools, including Carol City Middle School and Carol City High School, and to local youth service agencies, such as the North Dade Youth and Family Coalition (NDYFC). The college students perform tutoring and conduct “report card review” mentoring programs during a series of visits during each semester. Faculty and students assist the schools and local community by participating with faculty in science fairs, research, internships, tutoring, and school beautification activities.
