Law Student Participates as Judge at Regional Incubate Debate Tournament

By January 6, 2025College of Law

Third-year law student Larry Gambetti, President of the International Law Society (ILS) at the STU Benjamin L. Crump College of Law, considered it a rewarding opportunity to volunteer as a judge at the first of the two regional tournaments of the Incubate Debate Tournament held at Sawgrass Springs Middle School. Professor Roza Pati, Faculty Advisor to the International Law Society, has been encouraging and supporting the ILS student-members to be active in activities ranging from participating in top-flight events such as the Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law to contributing in local initiatives, interacting thus with imminent international law experts, but also contributing to educating young American minds to be articulate and critical thinkers.

This year, young debaters focused on the issue of the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban and whether it should be re-enacted, as well as on the question of whether the U.S. should continue using armed military drones. These tournaments are judged by members of the community — ranging from lawyers to professors, law students, military personnel, and local leaders – committed to fairness and to the promotion of an open, civil debate. Larry was one of the 75 judges featured by Incubate Debate, including distinguished experts like Major Patrick Connelly of the United States Army and Bill Frezza of the MIT Free Speech Alliance.

“Witnessing the dedication and intellectual dexterity of the students was truly inspiring. Their well-researched and thoughtful arguments on critical current issues underscored the importance of nurturing strong analytical and communication skills among future leaders. It was a privilege to be part of such a dynamic environment, where each debate round featured a nuanced perspective while showcasing the students’ ability to adjust and passion for learning. Additionally, connecting with fellow judges was a highlight of the experience. The diverse perspectives and professional expertise of my fellow judges enriched our discussions and reinforced the significance of a supportive mentorship network. I am looking forward to my peers joining me at the next Incubate Debate Tournament on February 1st, 2025, and to finding more ways to support initiatives that empower young minds,” commented Larry, inviting law students to join him this spring.

Incubate Debate is America’s fastest-growing debate league, teaching the power and practice of debate to young Americans through no-cost debate tournaments, the Incubate in the Classroom toolkit, and collegiate chapters.
