As we enter this season of gratitude and giving, we take a moment to celebrate the incredible ways St. Thomas University alumni give back to their alma mater. Through our mentorship initiative with the Honors College, alumni are answering the call to guide current students, offering wisdom and insight into the paths that lie ahead. These inspiring conversations are more than networking opportunities—they’re life-changing moments that help our students envision their futures.
Here are three stories from our current students in the mentorship initiative that showcase the power of connection:
Morghan Mullins with LaKenya Norris ’14, Sports Administration
Morghan Mullins was inspired by her mentor, LaKenya Norris, whose career journey began at St. Thomas University and led her to a thriving role in marketing with the YMCA in Atlanta. LaKenya shared her story of resilience, adaptability, and bold decision-making—encouraging Morghan to pursue her passion with confidence. “Our conversation showed me that my dream to explore the world through the vessel of marketing is very possible. I will carry these words of advice and wisdom with me through my career, and I am very thankful for the opportunity to speak with a professional in the field that I want to enter when I graduate,” Morghan shared.
Santiago Leanza with Councilman Bill McHugh, Esq. ’12, College of Law
For aspiring law student Santiago Leanza, a conversation with Councilman Bill McHugh of Brunswick County, North Carolina, was both motivational and enlightening. Councilman McHugh shared candid lessons from his academic struggles and eventual triumphs, as well as his grassroots journey to political office. “His story gave me hope and a renewed faith in local democracy,” Santiago reflected. “I am confident his advice will help guide me throughout the next years of my life which are critical to my future success.”
Ann-Adley Claveus with Karenyn Fernandez ’15, Biology
Chemistry major Ann-Adley Claveus found clarity and reassurance in her meeting with Karenyn Fernandez, a Field Service Engineer working with FDA-regulated labs. Karenyn shared how she navigated uncertainty after graduation and pivoted to a fulfilling career. “Her story reminded me that it’s okay to deviate from initial plans, and that change is part of the journey,” Ann-Adley said. “I have been afraid of making the wrong decision as I transition to a post-graduate life. Now, with Karenyn’s valuable advice, I understand that change should not stop me from moving forward.”
A Call to Give Back
These stories underscore the heart of St. Thomas University’s mission: empowering students to become ethical leaders in our global community. Students succeed through meaningful connections with those who have come before them. This holiday season, we extend our deepest thanks to the alumni who are actively participating in our vision and invite others to join them.
Your support—whether through mentorship, sharing your story, or making a gift—helps fuel the dreams of our students. Together, we can continue building a community where mentorship thrives, and the next generation of Bobcats can pursue excellence and achieve greatness.
