STU Criminologist Dr. Debbie Goodman

By Nicholas Fontecha

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA – Dr. Debbie Goodman is not just probing the depths of criminal minds in the classroom and her many Court TV interview appearances.

The renowned criminologist and St. Thomas University associate professor of criminal justice recently began hosting a new criminology podcast, taped at the new podcast studio at Biscayne College.

“CrimeTime with Dr. Debbie” highlights the journey of criminal justice professionals through their field. Goodman interviews local law enforcement and state officials, among other professionals, to discuss crime trends, the issues surrounding crime, and specific criminal cases.

Dr. Goodman, a frequent interview guest on national TV news shows across network and cable TV, is used to commenting on some of America’s most famous criminal cases. But she says her new podcast differs from her usual TV stints.

“I like to think of this podcast as an extension of the classroom and an opportunity to let local professionals tell their stories,” Goodman said.

She noted that many podcasts and shows within the industry focus on the crime, rather than the people solving the crimes. As a criminologist, Goodman has worked with various seasoned professionals who work tirelessly to protect the community and tell stories that go beyond gory crime tales.

“I plan to bring personal connections on the show that can give honest and inspiring stories to my audience,” Dr. Goodman said.

Her students said they are eager to tune into Goodman’s show. Nayshla Vergara, a junior in STU’s criminal justice major, is thrilled about the new podcast.

“As someone who aspires to attend law school and work in law enforcement, I love to hear about local success stories,” said Vergara, a junior from San Antonio, Texas.

Vergara said Dr. Goodman is “easy to learn from,” from the classroom to Goodman’s outside efforts being interviewed and doing interviews. Vergara called Professor Goodman a mentor and a great guide for helping develop her students’ careers.

Dr. Goodman, who joined STU’s faculty in 2010, is also known for authoring a popular criminology textbook author and formerly hosting the Comcast TV show Justice for All.

Chase Chatman, a senior, called Dr. Goodman’s new podcast a “learning tool to know what I am getting into” as he pursues a career in federal law enforcement.

“Dr. Goodman’s podcast approach is engaging, educational, and informative, and her podcast presents a great learning opportunity for her students and the community,” said St. Thomas University President David A. Armstrong, J.D.

“CrimeTime with Dr. Debbie” is currently available on Dr. Goodman’s website https://www.crimetimewithdrdebbie.com/playlist.

Dr. Goodman will soon add her podcast to one or more popular streaming services, such as Spotify. Her latest show is the second iteration of a similar crime-related podcast that ran periodically on iHeart Radio from August 2021 to February 2022: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/269-crime-time-with-dr-debbie-76809866/
